Dr Anoop Misra
Dr. Anoop Misra is presently the Director of Department of Diabetes & Metabolic Diseases Fortis Hospitals, New Delhi. He joined Fortis after 10 distinguished years as Professor of Internal Medicine, Head, Diabetes and Metabolism Research Group, and Incharge, Clinical Pharmacology Unit at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Dr Misra has done undergraduation and postgraduation from AIIMS, New Delhi. He has worked in best hospitals internationally; as a faculty member of the Department of Endocrinology at the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas USA. He was also the World Health Organization fellow at Royal Free Hospital, UK (2000) and University of Texas (1996). Presently, he is also adjunct faculty at Indian Institute of Advanced Research, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Dr Misra is an internationally acclaimed researcher and scientist. He has been a member of a number of national and international policy and decision-making bodies in internal medicine, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. He has been a member of WHO and ICMR Expert Groups for Childhood Obesity (2005, 2006), and in WHO Expert Committee for Appropriate Measures of Obesity in Asian Populations (2005). He has been a key member for National Control Programs for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, India, and in various top-level national committees set up by Health Ministry, Planning Commission, Indian Council of Medical research, Dept. of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, and the World Health Organization. He has been in Health Ministry committees for developing national guidelines in drugs and pharmaceuticals, and is a member of National Pharmacovigilance Committee, Indian Pharmacopoeia and is in monitoring committees for National Institute of Nutrition (Hyderabad) and Department of Biotechnology. He is Chief Scientific Advisor, Diabetes Foundation (India), and core committee member of Diabetes India.
Dr Misra has published more than 200 scientific papers in the international journals. He has received several prestigious orations and awards including and abroad: S.N. Tripathy Memorial Oration (2003), Prof. Austin E. Doyle Oration (2004), Dr K.L. Wig Oration (2005), Sam G. Moses Oration (2005), Prof. B.R. Sengupta Oration (2005), Searle Oration (2006), and Amar Sen Oration (2006). He has been awarded highest award for medicine in India Dr BC Roy award (2006) and prestigious National Honour, Padam Shree (2007).
He has several important new scientific findings to his credit including new definitions of obesity, abdominal obesity and syndrome X in Asian Indians. He is in editorial boards of five international journals on diabetes and metabolic disorders including: ‘Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Diseases (Italy)’, ‘Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders (USA)’, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice’ (UK), ‘International Diabetes Monitor (Sweden)’, and ‘Medical Science Monitor (USA), and is Associate Editor of “Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Research and Reviews (Singapore). He is also one of the editors of “Year Book of Diabetes, 2006”. He is reviewer for several prestigious international journals including ‘The Lancet’. ‘Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism’ and ‘Circulation”. He has carried out several international multicenter collaborative clinical research studies with Universities in USA, Canda, UK, The Netherlands, and Australia.
He has served as Personal Physician to two former Prime Ministers of India.

Padmaja Kumari Rani – LV Praasad Eye Institute
Padmaja Kumari Rani completed her basic medical degree from Rangaraya Medical College and her MS (Ophthalmology) from Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad. She did a post-doctoral fellowship in vitreo retinal diseases (Fellow of National Board) at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, followed by a fellowship with the International Council of Ophthalmology in Basic and Clinical Sciences Assessment. She worked as vitreo retinal consultant in Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, for six years where she was actively involved in community and epidemiological based diabetic retinopathy projects. She managed a rural oriented DR screening program (2003- 2008) and is a Key Investigator of Sankara Nethralaya Diabetic Retinopathy Epidemiology and Molecular Genetics Study (SNDREAMS) group
She joined L V Prasad Eye Institute in January 2009. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and an atlas on retinal diseases. She was awarded a grant by ISCEV (International Society of Electrophysiology of Vision) 2010 grant for advanced training in electrophysiology lab at Children’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School, Boston). Dr Rani is a vitreoretinal surgeon with focus in community eye health. She is currently involved in operational, training and research components of LVPEI public health division – International centre for advancement of Rural Eye Care (ICARE). Her areas of interest are diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity and paediatric electrophysiology.

DR Naveenam S Muralidhar did his medical graduation from Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore and M D in Ophthalmology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He did Vitreoretinal fellowship from Sydney Eye Hospital, Sydney and returned to India.
He started ‘Retina Institute of Karnataka’- a private tertiary care retinal centre in Bangalore with Dr Hemanth Murthy in the year 1996 and is currently heading the institution. His interests are Diabetic retinopathy, Retinal detachment and Macular diseases. He is actively involved in teaching, research and community care. Retina Institute of Karnataka has started free screening for diabetic retinopathy with Non-Mydriatic Fundus camera.

Dr. R. Kim, DO. DNB, working as a Chief Consultant of Vitreo-Retinal Services, Aravind Eye Hospital & Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Madurai. He has undergone fellowship training in the vitreo-retinal specialty under Dr. P. Namperuamlsamy, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai and later on under Late Dr. George F Hilton, University of California, USA. He also underwent training at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University, USA. Now he heads the Department of Retina & Vitreous Services, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai and runs an active Vitreoretinal fellowship program where he trains many aspiring Vitreoretinal specialists. He is also the Co-Ordinator for the TIFAC-CORE in Diabetic Retinopathy Project (Center of Relevance & Excellence) supported by the Govt. of India. He is the program director of Aravind Telemedicine Network which is doing innovative work in delivering eye care to the unreached. He has implemented telemedicine practice at the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level for eyecare.
He has many publications to his credit. He has contributed to Chapter in a Text Book on “Teleophthalmology” Volume XXVIII, 306, 2006 p., published by Springer. He has published articles on Teleophthalmology in various journals
Dr Priyali Shah
Until August 2011, Dr Priyali Shah was Chief Project Officer at Diabetes Foundation (India), a Non Government Organisation which is focussing on creating awareness about correct nutrition and, active lifestyle and behaviour change for the primary prevention of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Dr Priyali is responsible for South East Asia’s largest initiative for behaviour change, Project MARG: The Path, in various cities across India. A wide range of activities is covered to ensure a sustainable and significant improvement in human nutrition, health and wellbeing, with special focus on children. This initiative is being undertaken with partnership of World Diabetes Foundation, Denmark, and other organisations. Dr Priyali has over 10 years research experience in the field of community health, under-nutrition and over-nutrition. Amongst others, Priyali Shah served as a Research Scientist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, responsible for various projects dealing with micronutrients and maternal and child health. She is also a recipient of Senior Research Fellowship by the India Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, India. Dr Priyali holds a first degree and doctorate in Nutritional Sciences from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. She is a member of professional societies dedicated to nutrition, eg., Nutrition Society of India and Diabetes Foundation of India. She has more than 50 national and international indexed peer-reviewed research publications to her credit. Additionally she has also published chapters in books of Child Health and articles in various health magazines.
Mr Raghu Ram MD, FRCS, FRCOphth
I graduated from St John’s Medical College, Bangalore and completed post-graduation in ophthalmology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India and was awarded an MD in Ophthalmology. Subsequently I completed my specialist ophthalmic training in the UK in 1995 having worked in St George's Hospital, London and Hereford hospitals in the West Midlands. I spent six months in Oculoplastics at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, USA, prior to taking up the post of Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
My specialist interests are small incision cataract surgery, diabetic eye diseases, and medical retinal conditions including macular degeneration and lachrymal disorders and laser treatment for watering eyes. I have been actively involved in the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service which is successfully running on All Wales basis since 2003. I have been instrumental in setting up a new procedure for the treatment of watery eyes (Laser DCR) with the help of lasers along with my ENT colleague.
I run a specialist diabetes and uveitis clinic once a week. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the British Medical Association.

Tim Wess - Pro Vice Chancellor of Cardiff University and Head of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences.
Tim has led a successful research group for 15 years, He previously worked at the University of Stirling and the University of Edinburgh. He is instrumental in the development of policy in higher education and has advised research councils, Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills on a number of occasions. Tim is a Governor of the University of Wales Newport.
Tim contributes extensively to community activities and was awarded a “Science in Society Fellowship” from the UK research councils in recognition of his work to promote public involvement in science in a wide series of contexts. His research in cultural heritage has featured in the media and also as part of the BBC “restoration “series, He has also hosted a number of successful public art exhibitions in the school of Optometry, underpinned by a close working relationship with international arts organisations and charities such as Vale For Africa, RNIB, Artes Mundi and the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
Professor Dhavendra Kumar - Consultant in Clinical Genetics at the University Hospital of Wales and Hon. Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Medical Genetics, Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.
He is the Honorary Visiting Professor to the Genomic Policy Unit at the School of Health, Sport and Science, the University of Glamorgan. He is the lead Clinical Geneticist for Clinical Cardiovascular Genetics. After qualifying in Medicine from the King George’s Medical College, University of Lucknow, India, he completed postgraduate training in Pediatrics with an MD. Since 1980 he has pursued a career in Medical Genetics in the UK. In 1990 he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics (FACMG) and as well as Royal Colleges of Physicians of London (FRCP); Ireland (FRCPI) & Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH).
He has authored/edited Genetic disorders of the Indian Subcontinent-Springer/Kluwer, 2004; Genomics and Clinical Medicine- Oxford University Press, 2008; Principles and Practice of Clinical Cardiovascular Genetics-Oxford University Press, 2010, Oxford Specialist Handbook on Inherited Cardiac Disease (Oxford University Press, 2011) and Genomics and Health of the Developing World, Oxford University Press (In press). He has several peer-reviewed publications in pediatrics and clinical genetics. He established and developed a new biomedical journal (Genomic Medicine-Springer) that led to setting up the official journal of the Human Genome Organization (‘The HUGO Journal’). He serves on the editorial board of the HUGO Journal as Editor in Chief. He is also serves as a member of the publications and education committees for HUGO.
During the long career in genetics, Professor Kumar has engaged in undergraduate (MB and BSc) and postgraduate teaching (MSc, MD & PhD). He has organized a number of professional conferences and educational seminars. These have been acknowledged both nationally and some at international level. Professor Kumar’s current clinical and research interests are focused on clinical cardiovascular genetics. Special areas of cardiovascular research include molecular pathology of chronic heart failure and molecular genetics of chemotherapy induced cardiomyopathy. He is actively involved in collaborative work on diabetes mellitus and other complex conditions with significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
His extended professional activities include engaging in discussion and collaboration for raising awareness and promoting genetics and genomics in improved healthcare and socio-economic benefits in the emerging economies of the developing world. He is currently actively involved in medical genetics and genomics teaching and training in India and other developing countries through educational seminars and establishing professional networks of joint partnership.
Phil Rowlands - Founder/Creative Director. Funky Medics
After years as a working actor and writer, mainly in film and television, Phil moved onto the production side and is now a freelance film producer as well as founder and creative director of Funky Medics. He has produced or written both documentaries and drama for television and radio and worked with young people in the community on acting, writing and film projects and is also an occasional lecturer on creative writing and development. He worked with Heart UK – the cholesterol charity - as an education consultant and was part of the UK NICE Guidelines Group on Familial Hypercholsterolaemia – FH - (inherited high cholesterol) and co author of a paper - the NICE Guidelines for Identification and Management of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH): what does it mean for primary care? He also wrote and produced for Funky Medics ‘Carry on Cholesterol’, an educational DVD focused for children and young people with FH.
He is an Honorary University Associate at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences and a freelance project consultant with the UK charity Waterloo Foundation.

Manika is a Graduate of the Vancouver Film School. After winning an award for her student film, “Crimes of the Art”, she came back to Mumbai in 2000 to start work on the feature film, “Asoka”. This was internationally acclaimed Santosh Sivan’s magnum opus period film based on the life and times of Emperor Asoka, one of the greatest legends in human history. As Chief Assisatant Director on 'ASOKA', Manika did the visualisation for the film (the look and setting og 232BC) along with the conceptualisation and art direction of the songs. She wrote the English subtitles for the film and travelled worldwide around the festival circuit (Venice, Florence, London, Singapore). She Has shot commercials for Pepsi (Men in Blue, World Cup) with the Indian Cricket team in the UK and Lays Crisps with Bollywood star with Saif Ali Khan and Cricketer Mohd. Kaif in South Africa. Apart from writing and co-directing a short film for the Children's Film Society of India she has directed and produced music videos for Sony BMG Music including 'Mitr Pyare Nu', a Charts Hit in the North America and a music Album which aired across the UK; for UNAIDS, 'Tod do Deewaren' which featured 16 famous singers/pop stars and classical maestros, including Pandit Jasraj - the song celebrated hope, togetherness and the spirit and triumph of people, especially children, living with HIV and AIDS. She is now bust putting the finishing touches to her feature film 'KALPVRIKSH' produced by Raajaysh Chetwal/ Rhombus Films.
